The film was shot in Loire, in the Monts du Forez, Rozier-Côtes-d'Aurec and Saint-Bonnet-le-Château.[18] The tools used in the movie, which were very similar to the ones employed in 1943, came from Transylvania. The barbed wire fences of the concentration camps are genuine ones built by the Nazis in Romania which can be differentiated from the ones used for cattle by their denser spacing.[12]
Music plays a very important role in all of Gatlif's films, such as Latcho Drom and Gadjo dilo, Scott Tobias noted in his review for NPR.[4] Korkoro is no exception: the importance of music is evident from the opening credits in which barbed wire fences vibrate to the tune of plucked strings of a guitar and a cymbalum in line with the opening lines of the screenplay, \"the barbed wire sings in the wind\",[17] to the oddest tools used to make music, such as the clanking of buckets and wagon wheels.[4]
Bulgaria, 1943: A trainload of Greek Jews bound for Auschwitz-Birkenau makes a stop at a town in southwest Bulgaria. The passengers are unloaded and placed into a school, which has been converted into a temporary transit camp. Passing the barbed-wire fence around the school, a Wehrmacht NCO, Walter, meets a young Jewess named Ruth and unwisely falls in love with her. His friend, Lieutenant Kurt, who runs the camp, decides to throw a little party and has the girl brought to the revelry. There, Walter has the chance to speak with her. Having grown indifferent to the suffering of others, his desire for Ruth awakens unexpected emotions in him and he soon comes to think differently about the war he's a part of. It isn't long before Walter is making contact with the Resistance in Bulgaria in an effort to prevent Ruth's eventual deportation to the gas chambers.
When the Soviet troops free Ivan from prison, he is charged with high treason and faces a long sentence in a Siberian camp. Not wanting to die behind barbed wire or wait for an amnesty, Ivan escapes. Firecrosser is a story of a Ukrainian-born Soviet pilot, who goes through fascist captivity during the Second World War, becomes a GULAG prisoner and then an Indian chief in Canada.
Bordered by Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel, and rendered in thick, mysterious gloom, the occupied region of the Golan Heights is home to Adnan, an unlicensed doctor in the grip of an alcohol-soaked existential crisis after hitting a professional cul-de-sac and being disinherited by his father. Discovering an injured soldier on the barbed-wire border, he bucks the expectations of his village and decides to take him in, unaware of whether the wounded man is friend or foe.
In World War I, the soldiers fought in a way called trench warfare. This is when enemies dig trenches in the earth and hide in them. They try to shoot at the other side. The space in the middle was called noman's land because no man wanted to get caught there with all the mines, barbed wire, and machine guns at you. These weapons were a destruction and fault to millions of deaths. These disgusting trenches were where the sodiers lived. Men literally ate, slept, used the bathroom, and threw things away in these trenches and life was not \"high spirited.\" It is where they waited and watched for people to come up and fight. If communication trenches were under fire, the soldiers on the front line rarely got a hot meal to eat. Usually the soldiers would get meals that consisted of hard biscuts, cold beef and cold pork.
The most visually obvious is the ITN video of the emaciated Bosnian Muslim prisoners behind barbed wire at Trnopolje Camp. Surely, the filmmakers must know how discredited this image is. To quote from German journalist Thomas Deichmann:
5,007 Gypsies (Roma) from Austria (Burgenland), including 2,689 children, were shut up in a special camp in the Lódź ghetto. They were stripped of their belongings and abandoned, without adequate hygiene or nourishment, in a dilapidated building surrounded by barbed wire and ditches. The Jewish doctors of the ghetto found it extremely difficult to treat them when a typhus epidemic broke out, causing 629 deaths. In January 1942, they were all gassed with carbon monoxide in lorries in Chelmno nad Nerem (Baranowski, 2003b)** .
